The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's decision was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 13km from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist US President Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will have a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the period, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 national vote.
