European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
