Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
