A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in public projects. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
